Der raue, mystische Mattiswald birgt sonderbare Geräusche und ein Eigenleben.
Ronja ist die Tochter des Räuberhauptmanns Mattis und wächst auf der Mattisburg im Mattiswald auf. Sie ist das ganze Glück ihres Vaters. Doch als sich Ronja mit Birk, dem Sohn seines Erzfeindes Borka, anfreundet, eskaliert die Situation, und Mattis verstößt sie. Die beiden Kinder ziehen darauf gemeinsam in eine verlassene Bärenhöhle im Wald und verbringen einen Sommer in Freiheit. Als der Winter naht, kommt die Zeit der Besinnung für Mattis.

The rough, mystical Mattis forest harbors strange noises and a life of its own.
Ronja is the daughter of the robber chieftain Mattis and grows up in the Mattis castle in the Mattis forest. She is her father's entire happiness. But when Ronja befriends Birk, the son of his archenemy Borka, the situation escalates, and Mattis disowns her. The two children then move together into an abandoned bear's cave in the forest and spend a summer in freedom. As winter approaches, it is time for Mattis to reflect.
