Canciones Españolas Antiguas - Eine Hommage an Federico García Lorca
The Canciones Españolas Antiguas are among the most popular Spanish songs. Inspired by old folk tales and songs, the Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca created this song cycle in 1931. It is performed by both classical and flamenco musicians. In this concert, we pay tribute to Lorca and his enthusiasm for the diversity of Spanish culture and history. We present a selection of his songs, accompanied by some works from contemporaries, to tell the story of his life and work. The result is 1.5 hours (including a break) full of music, dance, and narration.
We will revive the atmosphere of the famous Café de Chinitas in Málaga in both image and sound. There, artists like the composer Manuel de Falla, as well as painters Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, gathered to celebrate, reinterpret, and reshape Spain's cultural heritage. Together with Lorca, this was the Spanish avant-garde, known as the Generation of '27. This group also included the flamenco dancer and classical singer La Argentinita, with whom Lorca created and performed the Canciones Españolas Antiguas.
The outbreak of the exhausting Spanish Civil War in 1936 and Lorca's murder by the Falangists brought this outburst of creativity to a tragic end. Nevertheless, Lorca's legacy could not be silenced. His poems, plays, and songs continue to inspire writers and artists. His ideas about the role of women in society, the acceptance of homosexuality, and his respect for Spain's Arab and Jewish heritage are just as relevant today as they were a century ago.
Eline Bosma (soprano) and Anoush Saadat (flamenco guitarist) began their collaboration while they were still students at the conservatory in Rotterdam and share their love for Spanish sounds and rhythms.
Anoush Saadat (1991) currently lives in Munich. At the age of fifteen, he was accepted into the renowned Cristina Heeren Foundation in Seville. He studied at the Rotterdam Conservatory with Paco Peña. In 2011, he received first prize at the Certamen de Jóvenes Flamencos de Sevilla for his performance as both an accompanist and a soloist. That same year, he performed at the Lope de Vega Theatre in Seville alongside great artists like Eduardo Rebollar and others.
