ANhören im Juni
6/13/2026 / 8:00 PM
Ansbach, Speckdrumm, Rangiergleis hinter der Halle

The ensemble theater Ansbach takes you on a journey - across Europe and across the city of Ansbach.

ANhören is an invitation to all citizens of Ansbach, travelers, and interested parties, to listen to readings at various locations in the city. Listen to texts about the challenges for a Europe that is in a phase of self-discovery and has already come a long way. Classic texts such as Bertolt Brecht's Conversations with Refugees are known for their concise and provocative sentences like: “The passport is the noblest part of a human being,” and offer a fascinating temporal perspective on the topic of borders in and around Europe.

In the present, authors like Polish Nobel Prize winner Olga Tokarczuk encounter the same theme with new thoughts. Tokarczuk writes: “The norm is a figment of the imagination. Each of us is perched on the border between our own inner world and the outer world, performing a dangerous balancing act there.”

ANhören is your opportunity to discover new and unknown texts and to encounter the theater ensemble outside of the known spaces.

Reading for you: Levent Özdil, Robert Arnold

Zauberzeichen
6/13/2026 / 3:00 PM
Ansbach, Theater Hinterm Eisernen

What does an "A" have to say and how does a "U" move? What happens when they meet? Will they create a painful "AU"? Or will they startle their surroundings as a cheeky "UA!"?
A woman collects magical symbols and examines them in lively episodes for their "sound content." Still unbound by the books of the world, free and spontaneous, they are surprisingly eloquent without saying much. It is a playful introduction and rediscovery of these little characters, who rejoice and get annoyed, team up or reject one another, grow beyond themselves together, and make sense – or nonsense. The ABC: Those who know it will be amazed, and for those who encounter it for the first time, it will be unforgettable. Everyone will be inspired to embark on their own explorations of these magical symbols that make words visible.

Inside Out - Was macht Musik mit mir? - Familienkonzert
6/18/2026 / 5:00 PM
Ansbach, Kirche St. Johannis

Musical journey into the world of emotions! In a mix of music-making and shared conversations, the Interchange ensemble explores the many different emotions with the children and helps to name them. Especially in the music of the 17th and 18th centuries, we find clearly contrasting affects – it is no coincidence that during this time people spoke of a “sound speech,” and the immediate, sometimes unembellished expression of feelings is at the center.

Another concert in the student concert series that Susanne Hoch wants to establish.

Supported by the German Music Competition, a project of the German Music Council, and the GVL.

Program:
Works by Vivaldi, Uccellini, Purcell, and Handel

with:
Matija Chlupacek I Recorders & Vocals
Friederike Vollert I Recorders & Vocals
Sara Roque Coroado I Baroque Cello
Felix Ritter I Lute instruments
Tung-Han Hu I Harpsichord & Chest organ

Don Quijote - Premiere - Sommertheater
6/27/2026 / 8:30 PM
Ansbach, Innenhof der alten Post

by Jewgeni Schwarz based on the novel by Miguel de Cervantes, translated by Günter Jäniche

The play based on the eponymous novel Don Quijote by Miguel de Cervantes is world literature that charmingly, humorously, and sometimes tragically tells the story of a man who loses touch with reality and retreats into fiction. Accompanied by his loyal friend and servant Sancho, the titular protagonist sets out to perform heroic deeds and make the world a better place. In doing so, he often fails not only due to his own shortcomings but also because of a harsh and cold reality that feels like the proverbial fight against windmills to change. Don Quijote is funny, epic, and asks the question: Who still needs wandering knights in our time?

So who needs knights, what is worth fighting for, and what does reality really consist of, is told in the summer theater play with a cast as fantastic as the adventures of the knights of La Mancha. In the summer theater play Don Quijote, all generations come together on stage with the city ensemble and the theater ensemble, while the city’s collective joy of playing unites in a piece about kindness, naivety, and reality.

Wenn alles auseinanderfällt
7/4/2026 / 8:00 PM
Ansbach, Theater Ansbach - Kleines Haus

„… that they were neighbors! Their own neighbors! They knew each other, where the children played together. (...) How does something like this happen? So quickly!“ In June 1933, hundreds of people were kidnapped in Berlin-Köpenick and tortured for days – there are far more than 20 fatalities. Similar acts of violence occur throughout Germany at the beginning of the so-called Gleichschaltungsprozess of the Nazi state. Neighbors become victims and perpetrators. Nationalist ideologies are once again gaining influence on the process of opinion formation, putting democracies worldwide under pressure. What happened back then? How do we remember? And what do the dramatic days of June 1933 mean for us today? Based on documents, archival and eyewitness reports, and conversations with descendants of the victims, the artists have developed this production.

Der selbstsüchtige Riese
7/5/2026 / 3:00 PM
Ansbach, Theater Kopfüber

He was gone for seven years – when the giant returns, he finds his garden full of playing children. But instead of sharing their joy, he builds a high wall. From now on, the garden is empty, the birds fall silent, and where spring reigns everywhere, only winter remains here.

But walls do not last forever: as the stones crumble, the children climb back – and with them return the sun, blossoms, and life. But one single child remains behind, crying and helpless. In that moment, the giant realizes what he has lost. He helps, the child thanks him – and his heart softens. The wall falls, the garden opens up.

In images inspired by Henri Rousseau's mysterious natural worlds, the play tells of walls and wonders, of the change of seasons – and of the power that can change hearts.

Participants:

Text: Claudia Kucharski

Direction: Lucka Svobodowa

Music: Darius Gall

Stage & Puppets: Claudia Kucharski

Performance: Claudia Kucharski

Bis dass der Bus kommt - Open Air im Posthof
7/11/2026 / 8:30 PM
Ansbach, Innenhof der alten Post

A Schlager song evening for travelers and those waiting

Waiting for the bus. It’s not coming again. Who is the man? Who is this woman? At some point, they start to sing, and German Schlager shows what it can do. It transports you to other worlds and reveals a very own worldview. West and East hits from several decades meet and tell a kind of story. But longings, feelings, and of course love are universal…

A cheerful-melancholic song evening with the concentrated Schlager expertise of the ensemble.

Text, collage, direction, stage, and costume: Axel Krauße
with: Hildegard Pohl, Katja Schumann; Robert Arnold

Abenteuer des Baronen Münchhausen - Nach Vereinbarung für Schulen
7/13/2026 / 10:00 AM
Ansbach, Theater Kopfüber

In the nursing home, it has become quiet. Too quiet.
But when Mr. Münchhausen takes the floor, the afternoon coffee suddenly turns into a journey on cannonballs, across lunar landscapes, and through the belly of a whale. Amidst yellowed photos, old armchairs, and forgotten memories, an adventure begins that really only requires one thing: imagination.

In this new version of “Abenteuer des Baronen Münchhausen,” two people meet at the borderline of memory and invention – one perhaps an old charlatan, the other perhaps his last listener.
What is true, what is imagined? And does it even matter when the stories are stronger than reality?

A humorous, touching two-person play about storytelling, aging, and the inexhaustible power of the imaginary.
