A concert in the series „Klangkosmos World Music in NRW“



The project „Yusan Zillya“ unites two cultures, two languages, and two peoples – Crimean Tatar and Ukrainian folk songs connect with the set poems of the Anatolian singer and poet Asik Veysel (1894-1973). The program was created by the cellist Nial Khalilova and the singer Natalia Rybka-Parkhamenko from the ensemble Kurbasy, which found a new base at the Les Kurbas Theater in Lviv (Lemberg) after the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014.

The Crimean Tatars belong to a Turkic-speaking ethnic group that originally lived in Crimea but were forcibly deported to Central Asia under Stalin in 1944. It wasn't until Ukraine's independence in 1991 that they were allowed to return to their homeland. After the annexation in 2014, facing massive repression, many had to flee, including the musician, researcher, and composer Djemil Karikov and his daughter Nial Khalilova, who now live in Lviv like many others. Karikov spent decades collecting numerous songs of the Crimean Tatars and significantly contributed to the revival of their music tradition with the ensemble he founded, „Maqam“. Nial Khalilova studied in Lviv and has been playing in the Lviv National Philharmonic Orchestra since 2022.

*Tas Cru comes from the New York metropolitan area, where he develops and records his music, and from where he has been bringing his unparalleled mix of Blues and Americana to festivals and clubs across America and Europe for years. He is one of the great songwriters of our time, his music is based on the unforgettable Sun Records sound, folk and country music, and traditional blues, always taking a slight step off the beaten track. His lyrics deal with the twists and turns of our coexistence, with his deep love for humanity and nature always serving as a respectful foundation.
His compositions range from captivating uptempo songs to gently swinging ballads and funky interpretations of not only his own compositions. Constantly by his side for a long time is Mary-Ann Casale, his muse and great singer. The two work together in the studio and on stage.
Tas is an award winner of the Blues Foundation in Memphis and has released numerous albums, among which “You Keep The Money” (2015), “Simmered and Stewed” (2017), and “Memphis Song” (2018) have gained strong attention and received multiple awards. Christian Christl loves the good old, handcrafted “Vintage Blues & Barrelhouse Piano.” Over the past 40 years, he has played concerts across Europe, in the USA, and in Australia. He enjoys thematically tying his solo concerts into entertaining anecdotes and can play plenty of songs on the piano…

The blues pianist Memphis Slim gave Christian Christl a good tip many years ago: “Blues pianists tell musical stories – and play a little piano along with it.” Christian Christl still considers this tip today.

No, seriously, Bernd has been releasing music since the 80s and has inspired a lot of people
left and right since then.
But that’s not the point right now. In this new song “Scheiße Mann echt jetzt..?!?” it’s about a man who wants to feel the right way but just can’t manage it.
You can find it a bit funny, you can find it very sad, or both, just like
life itself. This first single is a taste of a big new album called “Milieu,” which will be released in spring 2024.
It’s probably not the best song from this collection, but it’s solid fun and thus
practically superior to anything the so-called competition is up to.
Anyone who still has a problem with this whole thing should discuss it directly with Bernd Begemann.
He plays around 100 concerts a year, and each one lasts at least
three hours, but it will seem infinitely longer to you. Afterwards, he hands out free
autograph cards of himself and signs them with lacquer pens in the colors of silver, gold,
and copper.
